Posted May 15, 2018 06:14:12A planned landing site in the Mojave Desert is being called off after local residents were told to move on.
In a letter sent to the community on Thursday, residents were given three weeks to leave the area, including their homes, or face being fined up to $10,000.
A few miles north of the proposed landing site is the proposed land of the future Mars Science Laboratory, which was previously named “Mars City.”
The letter said residents were warned not to move into the area without prior approval from the city and were urged to call the police if they felt unsafe.
Some residents have already been told to leave, and others are being told to find another way to get to their destination.
The Mojave, which is known for its large sand dunes, has long been considered a place for desert survival.
It’s a region where residents say there is little or no natural vegetation.
It also has long struggled to attract tourists, as locals and visitors alike have largely shunned the area.
